P14| Data privacy War: the graybusiness behind the crawler
With a series of recent eventsbreaking out, a huge and secret business has emerged, showing us the other sideof big data that is not wonderful.
On October 21, Hangzhou policeissued a notice confirming that 51 credit card (02051. HK) entrustedoutsourcing collection company was suspected of provocation and other criminalacts. A series of problems emerged, such as using crawlers to steal user dataimproperly, abusing user information to collect huge profits. Previously, 51credit card apps such as 51 personal credit were named and criticized by theMinistry of industry and information technology for collecting personalinformation without the consent of users.
But what’s more terrible is that 51credit card is not an isolated case. Since this year, especially in the lasttwo months, a number of big data companies, credit companies and Internetfinancial companies with such businesses have been checked.
At the just concluded Sixth WorldInternet Conference in Wuzhen, “legal protection of cyberspace data” alsobecame an important topic. Government officials, academic experts andrepresentatives of leading enterprises from all over the world fully exchangedtheir views on such topics as “data security, personal information protectionand the rule of law on the Internet” and “the rule of law in data governance”.
When the car was just born, someonesued the court to ban the right to go on the road, because it was too fast, ifit hit a pedestrian, the consequences would be unimaginable, and there would beenough carriages.
Big data may be the “car” just onthe road in our era. We are looking forward to its bright future and infinitecharm, but at the same time, we have to make rules for it. Otherwise, it willreally “hurt people”, and the harm may be far greater than we think. The wholesociety needs to work out a set of perfect rules, and everyone may need a bigdata “driver’s license”.
